This print is a collage of six of the most decorative Tontine Heads. Dating from the 18th and 19th Centuries, these heads originally adorned keystones of arches in Glasgow’s first town hall at Glasgow Cross. In 1781, the building was taken over by the Tontine Society and turned in the Tontine Hotel, from where the heads get their current name. They were rescued when the hotel was demolished and are now housed in a public garden behind the Provand’s Lordship on High Street. They represent some of the oldest surviving sculptures in Glasgow and are representative of the period when the city was first starting to develop into the economic powerhouse it would become by the end of the 19th century.
The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).
