Looking west down the Clyde towards the Glasgow Harbour flats on the site for the former Meadowside Granary, one of the largest brick buildings in Europe before it was demolished in 2002 to make way for a modern housing development. In the distance on the left is one of the four remaining Titan cranes on the Clyde. It was built by William Arrol and Co in 1920 at the Barclay Curle shipyard in the Whiteinch area of Glasgow. The print itself is 12 inches by 9.25 inches (30 cm by 24 cm), and it comes unmounted on a high quality 300mg A3 sheet. This print is a collage of six of the most decorative Tontine Heads. Dating from the 18th and 19th Centuries, these heads originally adorned keystones of arches in Glasgow’s first town hall at Glasgow Cross. In 1781, the building was taken over by the Tontine Society and turned in the Tontine Hotel, from where the heads get their current name. They were rescued when the hotel was demolished and are now housed in a public garden behind the Provand’s Lordship on High Street. They represent some of the oldest surviving sculptures in Glasgow and are representative of the period when the city was first starting to develop into the economic powerhouse it would become by the end of the 19th century.

This ghost sign consists of a threshold mosaic at the entrance to a shop in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. It indicates that it was once home of a branch of the United Cooperative Bakery Society Society. The UCBS was formed in  Glasgow in 1869 to provide cooperative societies across the city with cheap, but high quality bread. Its main factory, built in 1886, was on McNeil Street in the Hutchesontown area of Glasgow, and by 1958 it employed over 1,000 people and baked around 50% of all the bread eaten in the city. However, due to a decline in the popularity of cooperative societies, the factory closed in the 1970s and was demolished shortly afterwards.
