This ghost sign consists of a threshold mosaic at the entrance to a shop in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. It indicates that it was once home of a branch of the United Cooperative Bakery Society Society. The UCBS was formed inĀ  Glasgow in 1869 to provide cooperative societies across the city with cheap, but high quality bread. Its main factory, built in 1886, was on McNeil Street in the Hutchesontown area of Glasgow, and by 1958 it employed over 1,000 people and baked around 50% of all the bread eaten in the city. However, due to a decline in the popularity of cooperative societies, the factory closed in the 1970s and was demolished shortly afterwards.
