The Argyle Street Ash Tree in the Finnieston area of Glasgow. This greetings card features the iconic neon sign above the entrance to the Barrowland Market and Ballroom in the East End of Glasgow. The Barrowland Market, known locally as the Barras, was created by Maggie and James McIver on land they purchased in 1921, and it quickly grew into one of the largest indoor markets in Britain. in the 1930s, a function room was added which later became the Barrowland Ballroom. More recently, it has become a legendary music venue, which is famous for its atmosphere and is one of Glasgow’s favourite spots for live music.  The current sign was created in 1985 and is believed to be the largest sign of its kind in the UK.

Standing at the corner of Argyle Street, St Vincent Street and Elliot Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow, this is the only public statue Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the city’s most famous architect. Created by the Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, it was unveiled in December 2018, on the 90th anniversary of Mackintosh’s death. This photograph was taken late one evening with the light from the setting sun reflecting off the usually green statue, turning it to gold.

La Pasionaria Greetings Card (A6 Size)

A favourite of many people, this statue, on Clyde Street in Glasgow, is a memorial to the 2,100 British volunteers who fought for the Republican cause against Franco’s fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. Of these, 534 died, including 65 from Glasgow. The statue was created by Arthur Dooley and was erected in 1979. It features Dolores Ibarruri, known as La Pasionaria (the Passionflower), an activist renowned for her passionate speeches. The plinth for the statue (not shown in this photo) features Ibarruri’s slogan ‘It’s better to die on your feet than live for ever on your knees’. This is one of only three statues of real, non-royal women in Glasgow, and the only non-Scottish one. Ibarruri was born in 1895 and died in 1989, some ten years after this statue was created.

The former Beresford Hotel is one of Glasgow’s finest Art Deco buildings. Constructed in 1937 for visitors attending the 1938 Empire Exhibition in Bellahouston Park, it was designed by William Beresford Inglis, who later went on to manage it. Having served time as a university halls of residence, it is now private apartments. The Beresford has an unexpected place in American 20th Century politics as it was here in 1939 that a 22 year old John F. Kennedy (the future US president), gave his first official public speech.
