The St Andrew’s Halls, built in the 1870s, was one of the first purpose-built concert halls in Glasgow. Designed by James Sellars, and with sculptures by John and William Mossman, it was an impressive structure. This includes this set of eight beautifully crafted caryatids (pillars in the form of female sculptures) by William Mossman. Each caryatid is unique and carries an item related to the arts or sciences. Between them are the names of famous composers, artists, scientists and engineers. Originally built by a private company, the St Andrews Halls were taken over by the Glasgow Corporation in 1889, and survived until 1962 when they were destroyed by a fire. Only the western facade was save and later incorporated into an extension to the neighbouring Mitchell Library, which it remains part of to this day.
The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).
