A ghost building is the outline left on a neighbouring wall when a building is demolished. These can create an intriguing mix of textures and patterns which can reveal the complex history of a particular plot. This print is of a ghost building on Oxford Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. The building in the background was formerly part of Sloan and Company, but it became more famous in the early 2000s as The Chateau, an arts space that, amongst other things, was used as a rehearsal space by the Glasgow band Franz Ferdinand. The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).

This print shows a MacLean and Company cellar light. Cellar lights provided a way of letting light into Glasgow’s many sub-street basements. They consisted of a metal grid with each square containing a semi-prism which directed light into even the darkest corners of a basement. Cellar lights using round lenses were first patented in 1845, but this form which used square semi-prisms, and provided a lot more light, was patented in 1871. They were originally manufactured by the Hayward Brothers in London, they were later produced under licence by MacLean and Company in Glasgow. Once a common sight on the city’s streets, they have largely disappeared in the last thirty or forty years, but some still remain.

Milarrochy Bay on Loch Lomond, less than an hour from Glasgow, is a popular spot with both locals and visitors. One of its most notable features is a lone oak tree, which for much of the year us surrounded by water. With the hills on the western side of Loch Lomond in the distance, it has become one of the best known, and most photographed, trees in Scotland. This photograph was taken at the end of February, when the sun sets behind the tree, creating a dramatic effect as the sun drops behind the distant hills, and casting a golden glow on the the rain clouds drifting across the loch.

This ghost sign can be found on the former Twomax knitwear factory on Old Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It was uncovered and restored when the building was being converted into housing in the early 20202s. Twomax was founded in the 1920s by Hugh McClure and Donald McIntosh (the two Macs from which the name was derived. It started in a disused pub in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow before moving to an old cotton mill on Old Rutherglen Road. From here they produced upmarket knitwear which was sold by the likes of Selfridges, House of Fraser and Harrods. Their clothes were seen as being particularly fashionable in the 1960s and 1970s, but by the 1980s the firm was in decline and the factory soon closed. This print is a collage of multiple versions of this ghost sign combined together.

While it is now heavily faded, it reads Boys found playing at balls or marbles will be handed to the police. This print shows an old street surface visible through a hole on the modern one which has been laid over the top of it. Through this hole, you can see the small, rectangular granite setts which once covered most roads in Glasgow. Between these is a long granite slab, which was part of a stone tramways. These tramways provided a smooth surface over which cartwheels could easily move over, and allowed one horse to pull a load which would otherwise require two horses. While only one is visible here, stone tramways usually came in pairs of parallel lines of such slabs a carts-width apart.
