This ghost sign can be found on the former Twomax knitwear factory on Old Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It was uncovered and restored when the building was being converted into housing in the early 20202s. Twomax was founded in the 1920s by Hugh McClure and Donald McIntosh (the two Macs from which the name was derived. It started in a disused pub in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow before moving to an old cotton mill on Old Rutherglen Road. From here they produced upmarket knitwear which was sold by the likes of Selfridges, House of Fraser and Harrods. Their clothes were seen as being particularly fashionable in the 1960s and 1970s, but by the 1980s the firm was in decline and the factory soon closed.

The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).

Skull and Crossbones Memento Mori (Mounted Size 10 inch by 12 inch)

Skull and Crossbones Memento Mori A4 Mounted Print

We offer free 2nd class shipping by Royal Mail to UK addresses on all prints.

Memento mori, or reminders of death, and frequently feature on Scottish gravestones of the 17th and 18th centuries. One of the most common is the skull and crossbones. These are often interpreted as marking a grave of someone who died of the plague or a pirate, they have nothing to do with the former, and are only loosely connected with the latter. The skull and crossbones flag we now associate with pirates were first used on gravestones in Scotland and Ireland and had nothing to do with pirates, but was borrowed by the Irish pirate Edward English in the early 18th century as a way to show his enemies they risked death if they fought them. This example of a skull and crossbones memento mori comes from an old gravestone in the churchyard of the 18th century Curmunnock Parish Church on the southern edge of Glasgow.

The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).

St Andrew’s Halls Caryatids Print (Mounted Size 10 inch by 12 inch)

St Andrew’s Halls Caryatids A4 Mounted Print

We offer free 2nd class shipping by Royal Mail to UK addresses on all prints.

The St Andrew’s Halls, built in the 1870s, was one of the first purpose-built concert halls in Glasgow. Designed by James Sellars, and with sculptures by John and William Mossman, it was an impressive structure. This includes this set of eight beautifully crafted caryatids (pillars in the form of female sculptures) by William Mossman. Each caryatid is unique and carries an item related to the arts or sciences.  Between them are the names of famous composers, artists, scientists and engineers. Originally built by a private company, the St Andrews Halls were taken over by the Glasgow Corporation in 1889, and survived until 1962 when they were destroyed by a fire. Only the western facade was save and later incorporated into an extension to the neighbouring Mitchell Library, which it remains part of to this day.

The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).
