Looking along George Street in central Glasgow through the modern buildings of Strathclyde University to St George’s Tron Church on Nelson Mandela Place. Strathclyde University was founded as the Andersonian Institute in 1796. It received its Royal Charter in 1964 as the first technical university in the United Kingdom. The sign on the right refers to the wish of its founder, John Anderson, a professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, to create a second university in Glasgow which would focus on ‘useful learning’ by focusing on the teaching of practical subjects, such as engineering. This photograph was taken at sunset by Colin M. Drysdale from the eastern end of George Street.
