The Citizens Theatre in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Citizens Theatre opened in 1878 as Her Majesty’s Theatre and Opera House in a building designed by James Sellars. It became the Citizens Theatre in 1944 when it was leased to the then newly formed Citizens Theatre Company with the aim of making Glasgow independent form London for its plays and theatre. It quickly rose to become one of the most respected reparatory theatre companies in the UK. The theatre was redeveloped several times in latter half of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century, leaving little of the original building but the auditorium. This included the acquisition of six statues by John Mossman from the Palace Theatre following its demolition in 1977, which are now mounted on the roof of the Citizen Theatre. These statues represent William Shakespeare (far left) and Robert Burns (far right), with the four muses, Euterpe (the muse of Music), Thalia (the muse of Comedy), Melpomene (the muse of tragedy) and Terpsichore (the use of dance), between then. However, despite these changes, it remains one of Glasgow’s best-loved theatres. This photo was taken after its most recent refurbishment was completed in August 2025.
The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm).
