2. Winged Figure On Dennistoun Public Library

Index    Previous   Next

The 1905 Dennistoun Public Library, designed James R. Rhind and topped by a winged figure created by William Kellock Brown. One of Glasgow’s Carnegie libraries, funded by a donation from the Scottish American steel magate Andrew Carnegie, Dennistoun Public Library has been a much needed refuge for the children of the city’s east end for over 100 years. Rhind, working with Kellock Brown, designed a number of libraries across the city, and the same winged figure, cast from the same mould, can also be found on the Parkhead Library and the Hutchesontown District Library. However, the Dennistoun libarry is the only one of these buildings still used for its original purpose. This photograph was taken by Colin M. Drysdale at sunset on a winter’s evening..
